Started by a group of families, the Nemasket Group is a non profit organization that has been providing career, individual and family support to both children and adults with developmental disabilities living in the Greater New Bedford area since 1984. In that time it has gained a reputation for providing quality services and supports based on the philosophy that all people with disabilities, young and old, should have equal opportunity to live, work and develop relationships in their communities.
One project at the Nemasket Group is the Building Futures Project.
Since 1999 it has become a unique resource to school systems in Southeastern Massachusetts by providing customized services and supports to students ages 14-22 with significant developmental disabilities. Building Futures recognizes that young people with disabilities and their families have dreams and visions for the future. It requires however thoughtful planning and commitment from all involved to ensure that the student has the opportunity to further their education, build a career and be valued members of their own community.
Building Futures provides a range of services. We support students to explore different jobs in local businesses so they can find out what they want to do for work. We help students find and maintain paid employment. We teach life skills in areas such as: cooking, shopping, banking and budgeting. We help students explore options for continuing education after they leave High School and we assist students in building meaningful friendships with others who share similar interests. All important activities as students prepare to enter adulthood.
Thank you to the U Mass community for supporting the important work we do.
